John was enlisted by Capt. William F. Tucker for 12 months and was mustered into service at Lynchburg, VA the 13th May 1861. He was a private in the Chickasaw Guards, Company H, 11th Mississippi Infantry, and rose to the rank of corporal. He was wounded at the Battle of Sharpsburg and left on the field.
The Confederate Government paid John's father, Clayton Stribling, $155.36 for John's bounty, his clothing allowance, and his back pay after he was killed.
