According to John C. Wilhite, Jr., a descendant of Berdotty's brother, Campbell Medlin Harrison, she was nicknamed 'Birdotty' by her father Joel Wilson Harrison who told her when she was young, 'You sing just like a little bird, daughter.' This developed into 'Birdotty.'
