Death of Mr. A.G. Smith

Mr. Alex. G. Smith, one of the best known and most popular citizens of Florence, died at his home on Poplar stree, on Friday evening last, after a long illness from paralysis. On Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock the interment took place in the city cemetery, after services at the residence, conducted by Rev. Harris E. Kirk. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, who was a daughter of the later Walter Glenn, and sister of our townsman, Mr. Lee Glenn. He was a good man, universally popular, and he leaves the heritage of an honorable and upright life.

Mr. Smith was a Scotchman by birth, and came to this country when a youth. He was for many years in the service of the Federal government on its public works, and previous to his disability from paralysis was clerk and bookkeeper in the office of the engineer of the Muscle Shoals Canal.

It was while in the service of the government that a most interesting event of his life occurred. He had received at Florence a large sum of money to pay the men at work on the canal, and in carrying it to the place of payment he was attacked by Jessie James, the notorious robber, and the whole amount taken from him. He was bound and carried on horseback up into the hilly country north of the river, and before he could report the robbery the bandit had made good his escape. The amount thus captured by the bold robber ammounted $4,000 or $5,000.
