John Jeffers was the son of Rev. William Jeffers (1821-1894) and his first wife Sarah Jane Knight. I have taken his date of birth from his death certificate. By 1862, John's mother had died and his father remarried to Unity Jane Warner (or Warren). John was one of seven children born to the family.

John married Sarah A. Staggs on Oct. 24, 1872, in Vigo County Indiana. The couple had eight children in Indiana and Texas between 1873 and 1891. One daughter (possibly the last-born daughter) apparently died young, according to family lore. The daughter often seen recorded as "Elena" or "Elener" is apparently a mis-reading for son Elmer, whose name is misspelled on the 1900 census but who is enumerated as a "son".

John's family moved from Indiana to Parker County, Texas sometime between the summer of 1878 and the fall of 1879. In 1880 the family is living next door to John's father-in-law, William S. Staggs. By 1900 John appears to have separated from the family, who lived at that time in Dallas.

There also appears to be confusion among genealogists between this family and another John Jeffers with wife Sarah A., with very similar birth years who remained in Clay County Indiana, as well as a John Jeffers who died in Oklahoma in 1935.
