Gerhard William Janssen parents are Johann Hinrich and Gesina Giesmann Janssen. Gesina was the daughter of Friedrich Giesmann 1822-1895 Spols,Ostfriesland,Germany and Johanna de Jong Giesmann 1825-1895 Spols,Ostfriesland,Germany.
Gerhards mother died when he was 11 days old.He was taken to live with his aunt and uncle, Focke and Gebke Giesmann Hafermann. He was baptized February 14,1883 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sande,Oldenberg,Germany. April 14,1898 he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Remels,Ostfriesland,Germany.
February 18,1899 the Hafermann family departed Germany from the port of Bremen,Germany on the ship The Trave. They arrived in New York Ellis Island March 2,1899. Gerhard traveled under the name Hafermann and was listed as age 16.
He lived in the Humblot,Nebraska area for a year,than moved on to Sterling,Nebraska and on to Hanover Township,Gage County,Nebraska.
While living in the Hanover area he met his bride Elizabeth Fanny Waltke. They where married February 18,1913 at Zion Lutheran Church by Pastor J.B.Reents,rural Pickrell,Nebraska.
They made their first home southwest of Cortland,Nebraska. They lived on this farm for eight years and three sons were born there,Frank and William and a infant son who died shortly after birth. They belonged to Christ Lutheran Church.
In 1919 they bought a farm south of Filley,Nebraska and the last three children were born on the home place,Henry,Andrew and Ina.They attended Zion Lutheran Church while living on this farm. After farming this farm for 28 years they retired to a home in Filley,Nebraska and October 1943 they transferred their church membership to American Lutheran Chruch in Filley.
Gerhard suffered a sun stroke and was in failing health at the time of his death. His funeral was held at the Lutheran Church in Filley August 19,1960 conducted by Pastor Paul Lohnes. Pallbearers were Edwin Williams,Harold Huls,George Steinkamp,Jurgen Alberts,John Fritzen and Edwin Williams.
He was survived by his wife Elizabeth and four sons Frank,William,Henry and Andrew and one daughter Ina Jurgens.
At this time his grandson Steve Janssen and his wife Angie and their two sons are making their home on the farm south of Filley.
I am still researching his father and mothers family history.
