Mary Catherine Siegel Varns was the daughter of Richard Siegel and Maria Elisabetha Holler from Meckenbach, Rheinland, Preussen, Germany. Catherine's siblings included: Richard born Nov. 4, 1826, Carl born Nov. 18, 1830, Philipp born Nov. 9, 1834, Fredericka born about 1838, and George born about 1841. Maria Elisabetha died in 1842 in Germany. Richard brought the family to the U.S. shortly after his wife's death and settled in Holmes Co., OH.
Richard apparently remarried at some point. The 1860 census does not show the second wife but does show other children: Elizabeth born about 1851, Margareth born about 1853, and Mary born about 1855. He moved the family to Lynn Twp., Hardin Co., OH in 1864.

It seems highly probable that Mary Catherine is buried in Berlin Cemetery, where other Varns and Siegel/Siegle family members are buried.
