Terre Haute Tribune, Thursday, Sept. 26, 1974:
"Shirley Bruner, 74, 4445 S. 8th St., died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Anthony Hospital. He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ. Surviving are the widow, Iva; two sons, John, Mishawaka, and Charles, Brevard, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Wanner, Indianapolis, and Miss Violet Bruner, Terre Haute, and nine grandchildren."

Shirley Bruner was born in Shoals in Martin County, Indiana. His parents were Daniel and Lillian Bledsoe Bruner. He had one sister, Ruth, and a half sister, Violet. Shirley was named after the physician who delivered him: Dr. H. W. Shirley. Dr. Shirley was the family physician who signed Johnson's death certificate in 1898. It was common to name babies after the doctor. Dr. Shirley was well-known throughout Southern Indiana.

The Bruners in Shoals were descendants of the Bruners of Schifferstadt, Germany who migrated to the American colonies in the early 1700s, settling first in Frederick MD, then spreading westward to Breckinridge County KY after the end of the Revolutionary War. They were German Lutherans in the beginning, but in about 1820 they became Methodist Episopals with several ministers in the family. From Kentucky they moved to southern Indiana.

In his late teens Shirley lived and worked on a farm outside of Carlisle in southern Sullivan County, Indiana. From Carlisle he migrated to Beloit, Wisconsin and worked as a molder in a foundry there. From Beloit he went to work for the Terre Haute Malleable Company in the foundry as a molder. While in Terre Haute he met Iva Aarnink. They were married on April 16, 1927.
On November 22, 1928, their first son John Shirley Bruner was born and on November 29, 1934, Charles Nelson was born. For most of their lives they lived in southern Terre Haute near U.S.41. After he retired from the Terre Haute Malleable Shirley worked for the Honey Creek School system as a bus driver and in maintenance.
Shirley had not been well for most of his life and suffered an acute short-term illiness ending with his death in 1974. Besides his two sons, he has nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Shirley was a kind, gentle man who was respected by everyone who knew him. His sons and grandchildren held him in high esteem and honored him as a man of integrity.
