Gilbert is the son of Wright William Joyner and Emily Batts. He married Susan Frances Joyner, daughter of William Henry Joyner and Serena Harris Joyner on 2 Jan 1873 in Nash County, North Carolina.

Gilbert J. was listed as 61 on the 1902 Nash County Voter Registeration List, Coopers Township and does not show who he descends through.

Info from book found in a flea market in Morehead City, shows that Gilbert enlisted in the confederate army as a member of Gen Ellis Light Artillery in Longstreet's Divison. He retired to Wakefield in 1919 and died there November 1925.
