An early African-American preacher born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Va., Samuel Robert Cassius became a man of extraordinary eloquence and directness. In 1897, Cassius wrote, "Instead of the Church being filled with the hallowed influence of the Spirit, it is literally heaped up full of dead men's bones. That place that God has intended should be a type of heaven, men, by covetousness, hatred, strife, adultery and backbiting, have made the pit of hell. If what I say is not a fact, why is it that the poor and needy are neglected, and how is it possible for one Christian to esteem himself better than another?" Cassius wrote many articles and one book, The Third Birth of a Nation, often reporting his work in the Gospel Advocate. Gospel Advocate, June 2005, 51.

THE CHRISTIAN-EVANGELIST
S. R. Cassius, our colored evangelist, writes from Tohu, Logan Co., Okla., that he has lost his house and its contents by fire, saving only his wife and children. He says they are in destitute circumstances, and appeals to those who know him to assist them in this hour of need. --January 26, 1905.
