An early African-American preacher born into slavery in Prince Edward County, Va., Samuel Robert Cassius became a man of extraordinary eloquence and directness. In 1897, Cassius wrote, "Instead of the Church being filled with the hallowed influence of the Spirit, it is literally heaped up full of dead men's bones. That place that God has intended should be a type of heaven, men, by covetousness, hatred, strife, adultery and backbiting, have made the pit of hell. If what I say is not a fact, why is it that the poor and needy are neglected, and how is it possible for one Christian to esteem himself better than another?"
