Merkel, The Rev. Canon Craig P., D.P.Th., St.L. June 28, 1953 March 25, 2010 Founding Rector of St. Stephen's Anglican Catholic Church and Chief of Chaplains for the Dallas Police Department.
He died after a long battle with melanoma, having lived with leukemia for over ten years. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 36 years, Stephanie, his son Josh (and wife Dawn), daughter Lauren, his mother Barbara, sister Anne, brother Brian, many inlaws, cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless parishioners and friends.
Craig was born in Washington, D.C., and was raised in northern Virginia. He was a proud graduate of Virginia Tech. He also received his St.L. from St. Bede's Seminary and his D.P.Th. from Master's School of Divinity. He worked for 20 years as an Air Traffic Controller at Fort Worth Center before taking a disability retirement. He then devoted himself full-time to his ministries at St. Stephen's and the Dallas Police Department. He was extremely proud to receive a Gold Badge from the Dallas Police Department. He was a member of the International Conference of Police Chaplains, Civil Air Patrol, Sons of the American Revolution, and was recently inducted into the Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem. He was truly a man of many interests, including firefighting, scuba diving,
and motorcycle riding. He bought his first motorcycle at age 18, and eventually acquired his beloved Harley Davidson. Many people have gotten to know him by seeing him riding around town on his Harley wearing his clerical collar. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and Priest. His life's work consisted of service to others, and his positive attitude, fighting spirit and depth of character were an inspiration to many. He will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas. The Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, at Restland Memorial Chapel, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas.
