Ed was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted on December 6, 1864 in Co. C, 120th Indiana Infantry and was mustered out on December 6, 1865.

Ed was married a second time to Eunice (Haines) Adams Ballard Bales (1843-1928). They were married on April 7, 1909 in Greene County, Ohio. They were apparently divorced between 1910 and 1919. Eunice was married first to Joseph Adams (1837-1875) and second to Abraham Ballard (1838-1913). Ed was her third husband but she went back to using her first husband's last name by 1920 so she appears on the 1920 census as "Eunice Adams." (Bio information provided by Calcat)
