James Joseph Cowley was born in New York to Stephen Cowley and Bridget Agnes Moore Cowley, in 1875, the tombstone indicates 1878. He moved to Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota with his parents and then to St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota and remained there the rest of his life. Family stories say that his family wanted him to be a priest, but he did not feel the same. His father was with General Custer's Army and the other family members lived in Larimore, North Dakota where his father died when he was young. His mother died in Great Falls, Montana.
James married Lorraine Myrtle Monroe and they had 4 children; Harold, James, Francis and Carl, all lived in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is the brother of Stephen Joseph Cowley of Great Falls, Montana, Michael Joseph Cowley who lived in the Dakotas and California, Ambrose Cowley who died as an infant, and Sadie Cowley of Great Falls, Montana.
