The confusion over his birthplace and his parents overlooks a lot of evidence, which I believe settles the matter. Thomas Hughes must have been the son of William Hughes and Mary Sudna Withers, as most believe, but some still doubt. The following evidence makes this clear.

*Thomas Hughes named one of his daughters "Sudna". She married Colonel William Lothar, from Hacker's Creek.

*Thomas Hughes' name appears in Quaker records from Chester in 1739, where, as a young man in his 20’s, he issued an apology for a quarrel with a fellow member of the Friends Society.

*According to George Washington's survey records for Hampshire County, published by HistoricHampshire.org, he surveyed 4 adjacent parcels of 400+ acres on Cacapon River between May 2 and May 4, 1750 for William Hughes Sr., William Hughes Jr., Hugh Hughes, and Thomas Hughes.

So, an origin story for Thomas Hughes from anywhere other than Hughes family of Chester County, PA, Colonial America, would not make sense.

There is a great deal of confusing information online and in books about Thomas. Various birthdates are listed as 1717, 1725 and 1727.

Various birth locations include:

Berks Co, PA
Cacapon, Frederick Co, VA
Augusta Co, VA
Arlington, VA
Elk Creek, Hampshire Co, VA
Buckingham Co, VA
Culpepper, VA
Dublin, Ireland
Glamorganshire, Wales

Most people seem to agree he was killed by Indian's at Hacker's Creek on 04 May 1778, but several people list 04 Apr 1778. NOBODY seems to know where he was buried.

Several parents' names are mentioned as possibilities including:
William Parsons Hughes & Mary Withers
William Hewes & Mary Withers
William Parsoons Hughes & Mary Withers
William Parsoons Hughes & Mary Susannah Baker
William Parsons Hughes & Rachel Sudna
William Parsons Hughes & Gunnilda of
Northumbria

William Hughes & Sudna/Sudrah Withers
William Hughes & Sudrah Boone
Ralph Hughes and Unknown
Ralph Hughes & Mary Susannah Baker
Benjamin Hughes & Mary Ann Withers
Thomas Hewes/Hughes & Mary Tedrick
Silas Hughes & Unknown

It appears that his wife was Mary Susannah Baker, but there are discrepancies with this name, as well as the amount of children they had.
