Sherman Jackson Burton was raised in Rockport, Texas, where his father was employed in boat building. He was the oldest of five children. He finished 2 years of high school, moved to the Houston area and worked in boat towing. He married Jennie Louise Arthur in the early 1920’s, and they had a child, Josephine Elizabeth Carpenter Burton (1925–1999). In 1930 they lived in Magnolia Park, Houston, and Sherman was a boat captain for the company Horton & Horton. That company moved shell in the Houston Ship Channel at Brays Bayou. In the 1940 Census, they lived in Morgan’s Point. Sherman worked as a steam fireman on a tow boat, but later became a captain of a tow boat. Sherman died in 1968 at age 67 at Pasadena Bayshore Hospital. His address at that time was 3018 East Main in Morgan’s Point.
