Spencer was the 10th child of 12 born to his father Charles A. Baucum & the 5th of 7 children born to his Mother Hattie. He had 4 half brothers and sisters.
He married Essie Mae Biggs April 21, 1934 in Newton County. In early life he logged did mechanic work and later owned and operated a vending and amusement business. He loved sports which included football, baseball and NASCAR & also owned a 57 Chevy convertible show car where he won numerous awards showing at antique car shows He managed a semi pro baseball team, Chunky Shoals in the late 50s and early 60s. His other interest were playing dominoes with his local friends at the service station in Chunky & gardening. His father died when he was 9 and his mother and the children moved to live with his uncle Dave Spencer south of Hickory where he was taught how to farm. Later in life he was an avid gardener and loved to do it the old way with a plow horse that he and a neighbor shared.
