He married Ellen Yates, daughter of Henry Green Yates and Mary M. (Carver) Boley, November 5, 1897 in Crawford County, Indiana. They were the parents of three children: Wilford Elmer Conrad, Minnie Corine Mix, and Gordon Sherman "Pete" Conrad.
John died at age thirty-six from typhoid fever in Ohio Township, Fredonia, Indiana two months before his third child was born. An illness that lasted six weeks. His sister Ella died of pneumonia six days later at age thirty-two.
He has no stone and is buried in Fredonia Cemetery. There is a rock near his parent's tombstones where he is believed to be buried. It was not uncommon in those times to mark a grave in that manner when the families had no money.
