He moved to Claremont from Meriden, CT where he lived for three years. He enjoyed working in the woods and for many years had worked delivering and cutting ice in the Claremont area. He had been employed by the former Kiniry Hardware Co as a coal delivery man. He was also a retired employee of the Times Wire Co in Wallingford, CT. He was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah Witnesses.
He married Elizabeth Russell on October 25, 1913 in Claremont who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by their son Leonard.
He married Hazel Elizabeth Thomas Branch on May 13, 1950 in Claremont .
The family includes his wife; son Eugene Valley of North Charlestown, NH; three daughters Hazel Kangas of Nevada City, CA [died 1983 in CA], Evelyn Roy of Brownsville, VT and Vera Dietrich of Manitowoc, WI [died 1989 in CA]; three stepsons Oscar Thomas Jr of Colorado Springs, CO, Ellsworth Thomas of Broad Brook, CT, and Wayne Thomas of Wallingford, CT; stepdaughter Shirley Amell of Tracy, CT; twenty two grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.
