Antonito, Colo. resident Asuncionita Ester Mondragon, 80, passed away March 2, 2010, at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, surrounded by her beloved family.

Asuncionita was born on Jan. 3, 1930, in La Isla, Colo. the daughter of Eliseo DeHerrera and Ester Ruybal DeHerrera.

Asuncionita was blessed with many talents and a wonderful devotion to her creator. Her love for singing made her instrumental in starting Our Lady of Guadalupe Choir in 1973. She committed her beautiful voice for a period of over thirt-sevenyears. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, and all that mother nature had to offer as evidenced by the feeding of the birds, planting flowers, and taking every opportunity to go to the mountains to enjoy some serenity and the peacefulness it had to offer.

A 1948 graduate of Antonito High School, Asuncionita was married to Fred M. Mondragon on Dec. 18, 1950 at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. The celebration of this union lasted fifty three beautiful years. In addition to being the Director of Our Lady Of Guadalupe Choir and member, Asuncionita was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Antonito Senior Citizens and Our Lady of Fatima League.

Survivors include her daughters Dolores Mondragon, Martha Mondragon (Tobias Salazar) both of Antonito, Gloria (Andy) Medina of Alamosa; sons Ernie (Linda) Mondragon of Alamosa, David (Angela) Mondragon of Antonito; grandchildren Clint, Edwin, Alfred, Michael and Alexis Mondragon, Andrew and Derek Medina, Anthony and Alicia Llanez and Jenna and Danielle Taylor: great-grandchildren Chandler, Garrett, Kelby, Addison and Mason Mondragon; one brother Eliseo (Porfie) DeHerrera of La Jara; sister-in-law Carrie (Francis) Vigil of Antonito and special cousin Florence Polk of Denver who was raised by Asuncionita's grandparents as well as by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Asuncionita was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred M. Mondragon, infant son Charles, infant sister and one brother Miguel Antonio DeHerrera.

A vigil service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sat., March 6, 2010, at 6:15 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos. A second rosary will be held on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held Mon., March 8, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the La Jara Cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be held on Friday and Saturday from 1 until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 until 3:30 p.m. at Romero Funeral Home in Antonito who is in care of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions can be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
