Son of Martin and Agnes Kruse Halfwassen. Grew up on a farm between Meservey and Belmond in Wright County, Iowa. Graduated in chemical engineering from Iowa State University in 1935. Worked for Omaha Power where he met and married Marcella Wasko in July, 1940. Returned to rural Iowa in 1942 and made a career change to farming which he did for the remainder of his life. Father of William Halfwassen (1941-) and Nancy Halfwassen Sonsin (1944-2020 ). Four grandchildren were born during his life; a fifth was born in 1978.
