Northampton, May 31 – Alvertus J Morse, 76, a practicing lawyer in this city more than 40 years and three times Northampton’s mayor, died today at Dickinson Hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Belchertown July 12, 1872, was graduated in 1894 from Massachusetts Agricultural College in Amherst, and then taught school several years. He was graduated from Boston University School of Law in 1901, and then opened his law office here. He was associated with Judge John W Mason until 1926, and since 1928 had been associated with his son, Alvertus D Morse.
He served as both councilman and alderman from Ward 2, had been treasurer of the Three County Fair Association for 25 years, treasurer of Northampton Community “Y” many years; was a mason, trustee of First Methodist Church, had served as city solicitor and at one time was clerk pro tem of Hampshire County District Court.
He served as mayor in 1916, 1917 and 1918, having been unopposed for the office the last year.
He leaves his wife, Mrs Lillia (Davis) Morse; his son, Alvertus D Morse; a daughter, Mrs Martha Morse Ferwerda, also of this city; two brothers, Raymond of Springfield and Ransom of Cotuit, and six grandchildren. The funeral will be at the First Methodist Church Thursday at 2 and burial will be in Bridge St Cemetery. Friends may call at the Charles R Dutton funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9.
