Mr. Horton, who was the sixth child of Joseph and Almira (Marks) Horton, was born in Farmington, Michigan, in 1842. He enlisted in August 1862 in Co. D - 4th Michigan Cavalry and was in several prison camps during his term of service. He was discharged in 1864. Mr. Horton, who was a prominent dry goods merchant and traveling salesman, married for his second wife Miss Linnie Beattie of Ionia (in 1895), a well-known employee in the U.S. Post Office and a young lady of sterling qualities. They lived in Flint where Mr. Horton died August 19, 1901.

Caleb Wesley enlisted in Col. Mintie's Regiment, 4th Michigan Cavalry, for the Civil War; was captured by the rebels at Chickamauga and was a prisoner 18 months, the last six months of this time at Andersonville. He was exchanged in 1865 and returned to his home at Farmington. He was clerk in a store at Farmington and later owned a store in same place and afterwards had one in Pontiac for several years. He then went on the road for Edson & Moore - a dry goods house of Detroit, Mich. Later was a superintendent for the William Hengeren Co. of Buffalo, N. Y., two years. Returning to Michigan was a traveling salesman for Strong, Lee & Co., a wholesale dry goods house of Detroit, Mich.

He was long a leading member of M. E. Church, being Sunday School superintendent and choir leader for many years.
