James was born in Grainger Co., Tennessee. James served in the Civil War in the Union Calvary. Sometime after the Civil War, he left Tennessee and went to Arkansas, where he met and married Lydia Louisa (Liney) Huffman-Howlett, widow of William (Peter)Howlett. They left Arkansas and went to Camanche Co., Texas. Sometime before 1900 the family move to Custer Co., Oklahoma. James and Liney had the folowing Children: Eliza Alice Evans 1872-1943. She married Byron B. Brown 1864-1943; Joseph L. Evans 1874-1947. He married Callie C. Sands 1876-1922; James Douglas Evans Married Ellenora Sands. All are buried at Beck Cemetery
