Jared was born near Wernersville, Berks County, PA. Before 1850, Jared's parents moved their family to Upper Mahanoy township, Northumberland county, PA. They would live in the tri-county area of Dauphin, Northumberland and Schuylkill counties for the next 25 years.

At an early age, Jared and his brother David apprenticed in the craft of stone cutting and engraving under the tutelage of the Rev. Isaac Stiely. Isaac Stiely, the son of George Stiely and Elisabeth Faust, was a first cousin of Jared's father. Rev. Stiely was a renowned minister, artist and engraver in the Mahantango Valley. Isaac's extraordinary engravings can be found on many headstones throughout the Mahantango and Lykens valleys. His artwork, which adorns many early pieces of treasured Mahantango furniture, is highly coveted by collectors today.

In October of 1870, Jared married Hannah Schwalm of Hubley Township, Schuylkill County. Hannah was the daughter of Jacob Schwalm and Justina Klinger. Their son Oscar was born the following spring. Scarlet fever took the life of young Oscar in April of 1873, soon after, Jared, Hannah and Jared's brother David, all moved to Reading, Berks County.

Once in Reading, Jared and David became employed at the Eisenbrown P. F., Sons & Company (Eagle Marble & Granite Company). Jared would become the superintendent of engraving, and eventually become a limited partner in the firm, with his brother David overseeing the engraving department. Several monuments located at Gettysburg National Historic Park were sculptured by Eisenbrown & Company, notably, the 93rd and 151st.

Jared's daughter Annie, married Wilson Eisenbrown; son of Penrose Eisenbrown, founder of Eisenbrown P. F. & Company.
