Caroline Lorraine "Cal" Ruhl, a daughter of Miriam (née Painter) and Levi Ruhl, was born in Perry Township, Richland County, Ohio. During the early 1850s, her family moved to Holt County, Missouri.

Miss Caroline Ruhl and Henry H. Brockman were married on 24 December 1865 in Holt County. During the 1880s, they moved to Spokane County, Washington Territory, and after 1900 to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

While no document showing her middle name is known, a Brockman-Ruhl family researcher recalls that an aunt was named Lorraine in honor of Cal.
