Johnson Rites To Be Held Friday In Hedley

Funeral services for Charles Edward Johnson, 86, who owned and operated the Hedley telephone exchange for many years, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church in Hedley, with Rev. J.S. Tipton, pastor, and Rev. S.A. Wolfe, pastor of the First Methodist Church there, officiating.

Burial will be in Rowe Cemetery at Hedley under the direction of Spicer Funeral Home. Graveside services will be conducted by Hedley Masonic Lodge No. 991.

Mr. Johnson died Tuesday in Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.

He was born June 13, 1874, at Paulette, Tenn., and moved to Donley County in 1913, where he owned and operated the Hedley telephone exchange. In September of 1958 he sold the exchange to General Telephone Company of the Southwest. For the past three years he has worked in the insurance business.

Mr. Johnson was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hedley Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Lodge Chapter 413.

Survivors are his wife of Hedley; one daughter, Mrs. R.H. Couch of Hedley; one son, Ernest Edward Johnson of Houston; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Two children preceded him in death.

Pall bearers will include Hobart Moffitt, Vernie Wade, Johnny Robison, Tommy Bain, C.D. Walker and M.F. Roller.
