MARTIN ANDERSON

The death of Martin Anderson, an esteemed citizen of this community and a veteran of the Civil War, occurred at his home on north Grand street at an early hour on Saturday morning. He had been in usual good health and attended to his accustomed duties on Friday. On Friday evening about eight o'clock, he suffered an attack of heart trouble, and gradually grew weaker until the end came quietly and peacefully.

Mr. Anderson was one of Chariton's best men and during his long residence here had won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. He was a man of noble qualities and strict integrity, honest and upright in all his dealings.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. E. L. Stone, were held at the M. E. church on Monday afternoon at two o'clock. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, and bore testimony to the high regard in which deceased was held. Interment took place in the Chariton cemetery. The Civil War veterans and members of the American Legion had charge of the last rites.

Martin Anderson, son of Jesse and Sarah Anderson, was born on December 23, 1841, in Rush county, Indiana, and passed away at his home in Chariton, Iowa, on January 12, 1929, at the age of 87 years and 19 days.

His parents moved to a farm north of Melrose when he was seven years old, where he resided until 1891, when he moved to Chariton. At the time of the Civil War he enlisted in Company K, 36th Iowa Infantry, of Monroe county, in 1862, and served until the close of the war. During his service he was wounded in the hand.

In March, 1866, Mr. Anderson was married to Sarah May. To this union six children were born, three of whom are living, Mrs. Lula Elliott, of Kirksville, Mo., Charlie, of Pacific Junction, and Enos A., of Chariton, Iowa. Three children and the mother, who died December 5, 1914, have preceded the father in death.

Mr. Anderson was married to Mrs. Ida Hougland in October, 1918, who survives him.

The membership of Mr. Anderson was transferred to the Chariton Methodist church in the year 1891. Since then he has been active in every important task of the church. He, with Mr. N. Weiford, were the only surviving members of the trustees who had charge of the building of the present church, the accomplishment of which task was to him a joy and a sacred duty.

Those who await the glad reunion in the Land of Unfading Day, are the wife and children, five grandchildren and a step-grandson, also a host of friends.

Among those in attendance at the funeral services were Mr. John Elliott, of Kirksville, Missouri; Mrs. J. W. Fleming of Osceola; Mr. and Mrs. Lowry Neff of Ottumwa; Miss Bernice Anderson, of Simpson College, Indianola.
