Dr. Sumner Harvey Hoffman, 86, Sarasota, formerly of Needham, Mass., and Bristol, R.I., died Dec. 14, 2008. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El with a reception to follow. Arrangements are by Toale Brothers Funeral Homes, Colonial Chapel. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice M., of Sarasota; daughters Elise Barack, Suzanne, and Ilene; and five grandchildren. As a graduate of Tufts College and Tufts Medical School, Dr. Hoffman practiced pediatrics in Needham, Mass., for more than 30 years. He was a founding member of Temple Beth Shalom. He received a master's degree in civil engineering from Tufts University and then taught there, and at Boston University, serving as chief of the Home Medical Service. His final professional position was as director of the Student Health Services at Brown University. Retiring to Sarasota, Dr. Hoffman led an active life. He volunteered at the Senior Friendship Center of Sarasota, joined the Palm-Aire County Club and served as president of The Tufts Club and the PHI Beta Kappa Clubs. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Tufts University, Temple Emanu-El or the Senior Friendship Center of Sarasota.
