According to Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700, "Peter Clois" was married first to Hannah Littlefield (1633-ca 1680).

Peter Clayes married, second, Sarah Towne. After Sarah was wrongly imprisoned on charges of witchcraft at Salem in 1692, the couple fled to safety in Framingham.

According to Find A Grave contributor Velcro, "Peter married third, Susanna [Harrington] Taylor Beers, on 2 Jan 1704/5 in Framingham, Middlesex County, MA. The source for the marriage is 'Massachusetts, Compiled Marriages, 1633-1850.'"

The surname of Peter and Sarah is spelled Cloyce in many publications, including Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Young Goodman Brown." Other spellings include Clayce and Cloys.

After Peter and Sarah moved to Framingham, they were known as Peter and Sarah Clayes. The Sarah Clayes house still stands in Framingham, but it is an endangered property. Efforts by the Sarah Clayes Museum Project are now under way to save the house.
