Mrs. Sarah Hornbeck of Monticello - The Mother of J. B. Hornbeck Dead
Another resident of Sullivan county, after attaining the remarkable age of four-score-and-ten, has peacefully passed away.
Mrs. Sarah Hornbeck, relict of the late Jacob Hornbeck of Wurtsboro, Sullivan county, and the mother of Mr. J. B. Hornbeck of this village, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Archibald [actually, James] Niven, in Monticello, at half-past 5 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, after a brief illness. She was in the 87th year of her age.
Mrs. Hornbeck's maiden name was Benedict, her father's family moving from Connecticut and settling in the Neversink valley when this section of country was but sparsely settled and subject to the incursions of the Indians. At one time the deceased taught school near Huguenot, in this town - say over sixty-five years ago.
She was united in marriage to Jacob Hornbeck of Wurtsboro while yet pursuing the arduous duties of a teacher in those days, and afterwards removed to her new home in Sullivan county. Her husband died on the old homestead in 1864, well advanced in years. She was the mother of a numerous offspring - ten children, one of whom died some years ago - and lived to attain an age which is seldom accorded.
The deceased was a woman of more than ordinary abilities. From her youth she had possessed a vigorous constitution, and up to within a few days of her demise she had scarcely known a symptom of the ills that flesh is heir to. She was of a kind and genial disposition and generous to a fault. Her many unostentatious acts of benevolence endeared her to scores whom she had befriended. Her recollection of events was very remarkable; indeed, when appealed to for deciding some mooted subject her authority was rarely questioned.
The funeral services will be conducted at Wurtsboro at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, and the remains deposited by the side of her husband and child in the village cemetery.
