Frank was the son of Rachel McCoy and Rev. John Coop VanPatten. John Coop was a Presbyterian minister and Washington state senator. Frank was a farmer who started homesteading in 1880 in the Biglow area near Wasco, Sherman County, Oregon. The homestead is still in the family today (2011).

He died from a head injury sustained from a fall while cleaning the Biglow well. He was survived by his wife, Mary Emma (Starns) VanPatten and three daughters: Helen "Bee," Lena Rachel, and Francis Edwina. Frank is buried beside his 2 year old daughter, Jennie Rowena VanPatten.
