Harvest Worker Dies In Accident
A Carnegie harvest worker was killed and a Mountain View co-worker was critically injured when the pickup in which they were riding plunged off a high cliff at the edge of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, early Tuesday morning.
Frederick Alan Johnson, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Johnson, was killed, and Gene Laird, 23, of Mountain View is in a critical condition at Memorial Hospital at Cheyenne, Wyoming. Laird suffered a punctured lung and other serious injuries in the accident.
The two men had driven to the top of a high bluff for a night view of the town and were returning to Pine Bluffs when their pickup failed to manipulate a sharp curve on the narrow road and plunged approximately 700 feet to the base near a highway. Laird was rushed to the hospital but Johnson's body wasn't found until some time later in a pasture 75 feet away after it was learned there had been two men in the pickup.'
Johnson and Laird were members of an eight-man harvest crew working for Mr. and Mrs. George Steckman of Carnegie. Gary Don Williams and James Lawrence of Carnegie are members of the crew. The pickup involved in the accident was practically new and had been purchased by Steckman for members of his crew to drive during their off hours.
First word of the accident was received about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning when Mrs. Steckman telephoned her son, Charles, in Carnegie.
Funeral services for Johnson will be held at 10 a/m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene, with rev. Bob Williams, pastor, officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Pitcher Funeral home at the Carnegie cemetery.
Survivors include, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Johnson; a brother Frankie of the home; and his grandparents, Mrs. Frank Johnson of Carnegie and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson of Apache.
