He was serving with the Household Cavalry Regiment Battle Group deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He and LCpl Scott Hardy were killed by an improvised explosive device while on operations about 20 km north of Musa Qala district centre in Helmand province.
Aged 21, Pte Grigg was born in Hartismere and lived in Stradbroke, Suffolk. He had served in the army for about eighteen months and was on his first operational tour. Described as an intelligent and thoroughly professional soldier, he had a razor sharp wit and was popular among the platoon. This all-round sportsman was simply fanatical about cricket and also an excellent player.
Pte Grigg is survived by his parents Mike and Pat, and sister Victoria, along with other family and many friends. His family said: "James was a truly wonderful son and a loving brother to Victoria. He was a team player in every sense, in the family, as a sportsman and as a soldier."
Funeral service with military honours was held on April 13, 2010 at All Saints Church, Stradbroke.
