John William Provine was the son of Robert N. and Nancy (Goyen) Provine and the husband of Mary P. Sproles. John and Mary's children were John Jr., Marion and Henry Sproles Provine. Dr. Provine, a Cole's Creek native, graduated from the University of Mississippi "Ole Miss" in 1887 and received a degree in chemistry in 1888. He received his Ph.D. from the Universities of Munich and Goettingen in Germany in 1893. He came to Mississippi College in 1893 as a professor of chemistry and was elected chairman of the faculty. In 1896-97 he became acting president of Mississippi College and served until his retirement in 1932. He was mayor of Clinton, Mississippi from 1902-1906.
Provine High School located at 2400 Robinson Street, Jackson Mississippi opened its doors to its first class of students in September 1956. It was named for Dr. John William Provine (1866-1949) in honor of his lifetime of outstanding service to education in Mississippi.
