Texas Birth Index records Ray's parents as Francis Cherry and Geneva Lee Carpenter.

Ray's newspaper obituary reports his parents as Jesse Thurman and Geneva Lee (Carpenter) Ball. The 1940 Federal census lists one-year old Ray living with his father, J. Thurman Ball, and mother, Geneva Lee Ball.

Ray served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1979 and his last known residence was Copperas Cove, Texas.
