Dorothy Lejeune "June" Palmer-Rice, 89, of Brookings, died Nov. 7, 2005, of natural causes at a local care home.

She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Canby, to Harry R. and Rita Johnson Gardner.

She grew up in the Portland area and attended Portland State University for two years before marrying Murray Palmer in Marion County on Aug. 13, 1940.

In the early 1950s, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer moved to Brookings and started Palmer's Variety Store, and later Trehearne's Clothing Store. They operated both for a number of years. Trehearne's was later sold to Phillips Clothing Co.

Approximately a decade after Mr. Palmer's death, she married Elmer C. "Al" Rice in Las Vegas on May 7, 1990.

She loved to socialize with friends Virginia Manley, Marge Horton, Jeannie Hall and Dorothy Akin. The women formed a Birthday Club, and were known for their "over the top" celebrations. She was also involved in the Eastern Star for many years.

Mrs. Palmer-Rice's father had been a major league baseball player, and she was an avid fan of sports of all kinds, but especially baseball.

She was known as a "proper lady" and was gracious and generous, her family said. She was also gifted with a keen sense of humor. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer had adopted their only child, Martin. She was very devoted to him, and had been unable to recover from his death earlier this year, family said.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Michi Palmer of Brookings.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, son Martin Palmer, brother Bill Gardner.
