Virginia was born March 25, 1924, in Pampa, Texas, the daughter of Harold E. and Lucile Tipps Newcomb. Her family moved to Amarillo in 1937, where she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1941. She married her high school sweetheart, Air Force Lt. Eugene M. Baker, in 1943. They had three children. She was a resident of Houston, then Anaheim, Calif., before moving back to Amarillo in 1982. As a young girl, she professed her faith in Christ and was baptized into First Baptist Church, Pampa, Texas, and later belonged to First Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church in Amarillo.

Virginia was a multifaceted jewel to her family and friends. She loved her family and her country, serving them with enthusiasm, determination, and faithfulness. Her love of history, especially that of her family, was apparent in her genealogical pursuits. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a passionate gardener, seamstress, painter, and was always creating beauty to share with others. Lovingly known as Mother, Mama, Mom and Gamama, her interest and pride in every aspect of her children's and grandchildren's lives endeared her to them. Prayer and music were constants in her life.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1957; her mother in 1960; her stepfather, Ollie E. White, in 1975; her son-in-law, Gearld L. Carter Jr., in 1999; her daughter-in-law, Betty Jo Allen Baker, in 2002; and her sister, Hazel E. Newcomb Celey, in 2005. Husband Hoke R. Chism Jr. died in 2001.
