Born on her grandfather John Brink's farm in Clay County, Illinois. Left the farm at age 15 and moved to St. Louis City where she scrubbed floors to get by. She eventually received $50 from her mother and enrolled in beauty school. At one point she had her own shop on DeMun in Clayton, MO. She trained Marie Ellison Hadd who wanted her to meet her brother Elmer. They hit it off and were married until his death in 1978.
