Dougal McCall owned "The Hills" plantation on the Jefferson/Claiborne County line. He was a distant relative of the McCall family that settled in the next county south, Franklin, establishing the McCall Creek community. He donated some land for the establishment of Oakland College, where he was on the first board of Trustees. His son, Duncan, graduated there and expanded the family's land holdings to include plantations across the Mississippi River at St. Joseph, Louisiana, where he was buried.
