Excerpt from a biography by Janice Ryan Bryson:

William Ryan was born in Glenough, Rossmore, Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland in 1858. He arrived in America in 1878, spending a few months in New York City and some time in the coal region of Pennsylvania. He then drifted west to St. Louis, Missouri, Colorado, New Mexico and finally to the banks of Pinal Creek in Arizona in January 1881.

Globe itself was just getting established as a community; the town consisting mostly of saloons and dance halls scattered along the creek.

His first job was that of a mail carrier for the old McMillan Silver Mine, one of the richest of the time, 20 miles from Globe.
