While residing in Craven County, he entered service under Lt. John Neil, Captain William Milwee and Col. Hayes and joined Gen. Greene at Ninety Six on 25 May 1781, where he was in an engagement. He was then sent to the frontier to protect its inhabitants from the Indians and remained there until November 1782. After the Hayes's massacre, Col. Levi Casey took over the regiment and Dunlap was transferred to serve under Capt. William Harris, Lt. Col. Benjamin Kilgore and Col. White of the Spartan Regiment. This unit went into the Cherokee Nation and engaged the Indians. He returned to a South Carolina fort and served under Capt. Lewis Saxon and was discharged in the fall of 1783, having served two and one-half years. A.A. 2091; X1781; Z4.
