Married August 17, 1846 in Morristown, NY

Samuel Slack volunteered for military service in July 1863 under Capt. Eli H. Alexander, while living at High Point IA. Early training was in Burlington IA where the 900 men he was sent to train with in September were hit with unseasonably cool weather and an outbreak of 600+ cases of measles. The who survived the disease were transferred to Helena AR by way of St. Louis. Winter set in before leaving Burlington, and the men began to succumb to pneumonia and other opportunistic ailments while they were recuperating. In December, after arriving in Helena AR, a smallpox epidemic broke out. Those who survived were mustered out and sent home. Slack never re-enlisted. Technically, even though his service was interrupted, he qualifies as a veteran during the Civil War because of the events which occurred during his time as an enlisted man. See "Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties Iowa" under section on Capt. Eli H. Alexander.
