John J. Garfield, 93, formerly 6 Center St., South Waverly, PA died Friday evening July 11, 2008 at Memorial Hospital Inc., North Towanda Twp., PA. Born February 13, 1915 in South Waverly, PA he was the son of the late Salvadore and Guiseppa (Josephine) Lafaro Garfield (Carfagna). John attended the South Waverly Schools. In earlier years John was employed by Ed Ropp in his monument shop as a stone cutter. He was a veteran of WW II having served in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Lexington from February 15, 1943 until the end of the war, and was wounded during the Battle of Midway. John was employed by the Ingersoll-Rand in Athens from 1958 until his retirement in 1977. He was member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in South Waverly. John was an avid baseball fan and supporter of the Waverly Little League. John is predesceased by his three sisters Christina "Tina" Cerio, Philomena "Minnie" Martin, and Mary Marcuzzi and five brothers Carmine, Joseph, Fallie, Michael and Anthony Garfield. John is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends Friday July 18, 2008 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Alteri-Bowen Funeral Home 314 Desmond St., Sayre, PA followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Vincent Langan, pastor of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Division St., South Waverly, PA officiating. Interment will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA with the Valley Color Guard according full military honors. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the Waverly Little League or to the Sayre Public Library 122 S. Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA 18840 in John J. Garfield's memory.
