Sister Alice Anita Murphy was born Veronica Murphy, age 77, former superior general of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Philadelphia, died Thursday (Dec 18, 1986) evening at St. Joseph Villa in Flourtown, (Montgomery County, PA).

Born in Haddonfield (Camden County, NJ), Sister Alice Anita attended Hallahan High School and earned her arts degree at Chestnut Hill College and her master's at Villanova University.

She taught at Our Lady of Victory and Our Lady of Mercy Elementary Schools and at St. Mary's Academy and Hallahan High School and served as principal at Holy Savior School in Linwood and at Immaculate Conception School in Jenkintown.

In 1963, Sister Alice Anita was appointed directress of junior sisters of the Sisters of St. Joseph, a post she held until her election in 1968 as superior general of the congregation.

During her two terms - 1968 to 1979 - in office, she was awarded honorary degrees by Allentown College of St. Francis de Sales, Chestnut Hill College and from St. Charles Seminary in recognition of her contribution as a religious leader, particularly in bringing new vitality to religious orders as mandated by the Second Vatican Council.

Sister Alice Anita served on the boards of trustees of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and St. Luke's Institute, both in Washington. She was a member of the board of governors of the 41st Eucharistic Congress held in Philadelphia .
