Leland J. Glazebrook, 88, of Sullivan, died at 4:15 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2010, at Sullivan Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Mr. Glazebrook was born April 21, 1921, in Spring Garden, the son of Andy H. and Marilee Story Glazebrook.
He was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church, Sullivan Country Club, was a Sullivan Middle School Mentor, a Master Gardener and loved working in his garden. Leland attended University of Illinois and farmed in the Champaign County area.
He was an insurance agent for Country Companies from 1955 to 1968, then was Farm Director for WLBH Radio in Mattoon from 1968 to 1975. He organized Illinois Corn-Soybean Network in 1973 and was heard on 25 radio stations in Illinois and Iowa. He was an active member of Moultrie County Farm Bureau, National AGRI Marketing Association and National Association of State Radio Networks. He also had been farm director for WDZQ Radio in Decatur and worked at WMCI Radio, Mattoon. He has an honorary FFA State Farmers Degree and served as State FFA President from 1939 to 1940.
Leland was first elected to the Lake Land College Board of Trustees in 1976 and served 34 years, the longest serving trustee in the college's history and one of the longest serving community college trustees in the state of Illinois. Leland served four times as board chair and several times as an officer. During his tenure, the college experienced 135 percent growth in enrollment and added several new buildings while maintaining a high level of academic quality and a focus on students. He had a major influence in the development of innovative programs at Lake Land College. Under his encouragement and vision, the college developed into a leader in distance education, online course delivery, agriculture programs and use of technology. Leland cared deeply about employees and students at Lake Land College and attended numerous campus events. Under his leadership, the college opened its first permanent extension center, Kluthe Center for Higher Education and Technology in Effingham, and the ag technology building. He chaired the only successful tax referendum in the history of Lake Land. He also served on several committees of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association.
His name is also familiar among Illinois legislators, with whom he communicated on a regular basis on behalf of Lake Land College and Illinois community colleges. Leland was well known for his sage advice, or his "Lelandisms," which offered down-home humor with a twist of realism. He encouraged employees to think ahead and to reach for the latest in their fields. His powerful letters to the editor, which addressed key as well as controversial issues facing Illinois community colleges, have been published in local newspapers, Illinois Farm Bureau's Farm Week, Illinois Agri-News, and ICCTA and Illinois Community College Board newsletters. Leland received the Ray Hartstein Trustee Achievement Award from Illinois Community College Trustees Association in June 1999 and was nominated for the 2000 American Association of Community College Trustees' Trustee Leadership Award.
Leland married Evalyn Moore March 3, 1972, in Fisher, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Turk (Judy) Glazebrook of Chicago, Richard (Carol) Glazebrook of Sullivan, Roger (Sally) Glazebrook of Sullivan, Jim (Teena) Glazebrook of Joliet, Helen Glazebrook of Sullivan, and Sarah Glazebrook of Windsor; stepchildren, Gary (Judy) Fish of Bloomington, Jim (Donna) Fish of Villa Grove, Bob Fish of Bloomington, and Peggy Fish of Springfield; 20 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Leland was loved and liked by everyone and will be greatly missed. He never knew a stranger.
