Goal Post Mishap
Kills Commissioner
GARDEN CITY - W. L. (Bill) Robinson, 65, a Glasscock County Commissioner, was killed Monday when a goal post fell on him while he was helping to lengthen the Garden City football field.
Robinson was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:10 a.m. Monday at Cowper Clinic in Big Spring.
Robinson and another man were watching as a county roadgrader pulled over the goal post with a chain. Witnesses said the goal post jerked out of the ground, and in falling struck Robinson on the back of the head. Glasscock County Sheriff Royce Pruitt said the man's skull was fractured. The accident occurred at 9:45 a.m.
Services are pending with Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home.
Mr. Robinson was born March 9, 1908. He married Berdie Mae Deel on Nov. 12, 1927 in Big Spring. He had been a resident of Glasscock County since 1934. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Survivors are seven daughters, Mrs. Glen Hillger, Mrs. J. E. Wooten, Rebecca Robinson, all of Garden City; Mrs. George Hillger of Midland, Mrs. Wayne Davis of Coahoma, Mrs. Jim Craft of Fowler, Colo. and Deborah Robinson of Lubbock; nine sons, John James and Jerry Don, all of Garden City, Billy of Alaska, Kenneth of Odessa, Loren of Midland, Melvin in Spain, Richard of Eunice, N.M. and Gary of Big Spring; six sisters, Mrs. P. H. Oates, Mrs. H. D. Conington and Mrs. Maudie King, all of Lamesa, Mrs. B. E. Winterrawd of Ackerly, Mrs. Farris Brooks of Florey and Mrs. Troy Pearce of Stanton; 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
