A graduate of Snellville High School, she attended Rabun Gap Nachoochee Junior College in North Georgia graduating in June 1941 with a teacher's certificate.

Following graduation, she worked for a short time in Lawrenceville, Georgia and then accepted a job with AT&T in Atlanta where she met her future husband, Carl J. In 1960 she joined her husband in opening an independent insurance agency, Pope & Company, Inc. Her careful attention to detail and his natural salesmanship and drive, developed it into a highly regarded and successful company.

Before her husband's death in 1989, the couple had retired to a home they built on Lake Lanier where they had spent many years boating and fishing. Always faithful to her Baptist roots, Judy, as she was known, and her husband were members of Brookhaven Baptist Church for over 25 years and Wieuca Road Baptist Church for ten years.
