Hartwell R.Dunham, after whose brother,Amos Dunham, Dunham post, 141, G. A. R. was named, died at 12:30 oclock Thursday morning at the home of his sister, Miss Marietta Dunham and Mrs. Hannahretta Pharo, 1203 W. Main street. He was sixty years old. His death was caused by chronic Brights disease, with which he had been suffering for the past two years.
Mr. Dunham was born in Decatur, Aug, 20, 1856. He was a son of Mr.and Mrs. Dayton Dunhamand and was the youngest of ten chldren. When the Civl war broke out Dayton Dunham and son,Amos enlisted in one of the regiments, organized here and they fought side by side in the battle of Fort Donaldson. Amos Dunham lost his life in this battle and his father was wounded. Amos was he first Macon county solider to be killed during the war and for that reason the local post of the Grany Army of the Republic was named after him.
Hartell R. Dunham spent practically all his life in Decatur. For many years he bought and sold livestock, his barns being located on ground which now forms the west part of the James Millikin university campus. When his stables gave way to the university Mr.Dunham gave up the livestock business and engaged in real estate business, which he carried on till his health failed about two years ago.
Mr.Dunham is survived by two brothers, H. D., 975 W.Eldorado, and Charles Dunham, RR 9, 4 sisters, Mrs. Sarah Daly, 1177 W. Main, Mrs. C.E. Bullard, 1193 W.Main, Mrs. Marietta Day and Mrs. Hanahretta Pharo, 1208 w. Main.
