Prominent Ruston Businessman Dies

One of Ruston's most prominent citizens and business pioneers died Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. He suffered a heart attack Friday evening in his home.

Mr. Heard achieved state-wide recognition while serving as president of the Louisiana State Board of Education.

He was a member of the Board for 12 years representing the Third Public Service Commission District. He served on the Board until 1960.

In addition to being president of the State Board, he also served as vice president, chairman and committee member.

Mr. Heard was perhaps most widely known as the owner of Raymond Heard, Inc., a wholesale grocery concern with home offices in Ruston.

His business affiliations included membership in the Ruston Chamber of Commerce, Motor Transport Association, and the Louisiana Wholesale Grocer's Association.

Mr. Heard was extremely active in civic circles in Ruston. He was a charter member of the Ruston Kiwanis Club, the local American Legion post, and the Ruston Rotary Club.

Not only had Mr. Heard achieved recognition for his activities in business and civic groups, but he was awarded many prize ribbons in cattle exhibitions.

In November, Heard own ten awards in beef cattle competition in the All-Louisiana Livestock Show held in Baton Rouge.

In 1959, he won first place in the Louisiana State Fair in Shreveport for a Hereford bull.

Mr. Heard owned 250 head of cattle. The farm is located about four miles west of Ruston.

He entered cattle competition only as a hobby and had won prizes in livestock exhibitions for 12 years. He was a member of the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association.

Mr. Heard was born in Lincoln Parish and was a World War I Navy veteran.

He was a graduate of the school of engineering at Tech and attended the business administration school at LSU.

Funeral services for C. Raymond Heard were held in his home at 300 East Georgia in Ruston on Sunday, January 13, at 2:00 p.m.

Services were conducted by the Rev. Joseph Cathuarl, pastor of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Spears Funeral Home of Ruston.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mayme Cargill Heard of Ruston; three daughters, Mrs. George Link of Sumatra, Indonesia, Mrs. John Morris of Rayville, and Mrs. Thomas Bowman of Dallas, Tex.; two sisters, Miss Blanche Heard of Ruston and Mrs. G. W. McGinty of Ruston; and six grandchildren.
