Dwight Charles 'Whitey' Holliday, 83, of Roscoe dies at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Rockford. Born Jan. 24, 1918, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Raymond B. and Elizabeth Baumgertner Holliday. He married the former Anita Mae Fuller on April 10, 1939, in Dubuque, Iowa. Whitey was employed as a machinist layout man at Beloit Corp. for 32 years, retiring in 1981. He attended Beloit High School and vocational school for two years. Veteran of the Merchant Marines (June 12, 1945), serving as a galleyman and messman aboard the oil tanker SS Canap Namau, with initial port in Los Angeles, Calif. He traveled to the Persian Gulf before his discharge on Oct. 10, 1945, at Mobile, Ala. Whitey's lifelong passion was riding motorcycles. Before his marriage to Anita, he rode 'TT' plus being a hookman for hill climbs. To earn extra money on weekends, he would race for cash prizes with his Harley '74, and did so even after his marriage. During this time he worked at Fairbanks-Morse in Beloit, and successfully became a journeyman machinist layout man. With this achievement he was able to move on to the Manitowoc Ship Building Co. in Manitowoc, Wis., where they built submarines. He also focused on a minor interest in flying airplanes, and took lessons for six months. Whitey also enjoyed waterskiing. Whitey and Anita moved to California in 1943 and moved to Roscoe in 1948, where he resumed riding motorcycles. In 1972 they went with the American Racers to the Anglo American Match Race Series Four for England and Italy. During the 1980's Harley Davidson Corp. had the ABCs of touring, which Whitey and Anita successfully completed. They also participated locally with Kegel motorcycle events such as Poker Runs and other riding incentives. They enjoyed the National Races by riding their Harley to them anywhere in the Lower 48 visiting with many racers and pit crews they knew. They rode their Harleys to Alaska three times and have ridden in all 50 states. They achieved this by renting a Harley in Hawaii. They are both lifetime members of the American Motorcycle Association. Whitey and Anita spent winters in Florida and summers at home and traveling.
