Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as Major of the 2nd California Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 4th California Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". After the war he served as Police chief and City Marshal of San Francisco, California, as Secretary of State for Idaho, and as commander of the Idaho National Guard. He was the brother of Brevet Brigadier General Greely Stevens Curtis.
